One moonless night after driving for hours we tossed our tent on the shore of a pebbly cove in the San Juan Islands, WA. Around 3am we woke startled to loud breathing/scraping/splashing at our door. Fear! Was it a bear? Someone coming ashore? By flashlight we could see the entire bodies of the orcas gleefully rubbing themselves on the pebbles a car length away. Felt like you could touch them. Perfect little pocket of awe.
Utterly gorgeous. I loved the bemused raven too. Thank you for expressing what is so easy to forget in our modern urban existence… the wild has no clean lines.
A pod of humans working together to 'hunt' a pod of killer whales, working together to capture their prey. "We are nature in human form" (Tara Brach). Marvellous stuff.
there's nothing like seeing animals in their habitat, their element, living their best lives. the wonder of it all, the realisation we are just another species among many... it's yummy for our hearts and our heads.
Miraculous and magnificent, love the way you have captured both the excitement of the hunt and the presence of these awesome creatures, and the heartache of the hunted, the vulnerable selkie pup, with its huge and innocent eyes. Nature is wild and unpredictable, and we are blessed who live on the wind-swept shorelines of this island. Thank you Rebecca.
What a peach to savour in the early morning! The best writing comes from the unexpected, the sudden transformation of moment and mood. I too was with you, and I love the fact that this excitement pulls so many people out into the cold. What a memory to have nested away.
'This is the power of the wild. It nourishes the children within us. It reminds us of the ecstasy of being alive' ⚡
Yes I loved that quote too. So beautiful.
What an amazing experience so beautifully described. Wonderful writing 🤎
Thank you so much both 🩵

Oh... yes Rebecca. Marvellous writing - of experiencing a marvel.
You just took me from a hot sunny lazy Australian Pacific Ocean day, to a rocky, frozen, gale blown North Sea shore, and Orcas hunting.
Thankyou.....
